Curtains: 2009 Forecast

Many fabric designs are versatile and timeless and can add a lavish quality to traditional interiors and warm up minimalist designs without compromising that edgy modern look.

Sheers with metallic and high lustre yarns, French Chintz and beautiful coordinate ranges incorporating prints, jacquards, solids and sheers continue to inspire.

Nick Bippus, Director at The Bricos Group, says that global window fashion trends continue to be dominated by texture, in both blinds and curtains.

“Minimalistic roller and roman blinds are being softened when used with modern sheers and drapery fabrics. Bold and strong colours are emerging once again in drapery, with limes, oranges, and earthy tones on the agenda for the coming seasons,” he said.

The clean sophisticated lines of blinds and shutters continue to be strong as they complement architectural features of homes.

Environment Friendly Window Coverings

While it is common knowledge that carefully choosing window coverings can have a positive impact on your energy bill, the window covering product itself can leave an environment footprint.

Nick Bippus from The Bricos Group says that manufacturers are stepping up to demands to deliver effective ‘green’ window covering products which do not compromise quality or styling.

“The European markets have already adopted a variety of Environmentally Friendly fabrics, which have filtered through to the southern hemisphere. High quality products, which lessen our footprint on the environment for future generations, are now being offered. These products provide environmentally conscious consumers, architects and specifiers with a choice,” he said.

All this is now being achieved without compromising quality or styling of window coverings. Quality blind fabric manufacturers are substituting PVC for Polyester which significantly reduces atmospheric emissions during processing.

In fact, we will soon be seeing products which are endorsed by the Green Building Council of Australia which monitors Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) in products to give accreditation.

Free Design Advice: Blinds

If you love the clean and simple stying of blinds, Roman Blinds might be just want you are looking for.

Just about any type of fabric may be used for Roman Blinds and there are an endless array of fringes that may be applied to the bottom edge to dress them up.

With the release of a product called Roman Ezy® the actual manufacturing components have evolved to become something of a design feature.

The Roman Ezy ‘extrusion’ is a lightweight invention that clamps the fabric in a neat seam. The cord which lifts and lowers the blind, runs through a moulding which is attached to the extrusion.

This instantly alleviates the need for stitching the fabric, which can create annoying pin holes of light defeating the purpose of a block-out blind.

The ‘extrusions’ have a sleek modern styling and are available in a number of colours including white, black and an anodized aluminum.
